All students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (any year) will automatically qualify for placement in Focus, the district elementary gifted and talented program that serves students in grades 3, 4 and 5.

Any students who have scored at the 97th percentile or above on both math and reading on the MCA or MAP tests will automatically qualify.  These scores can be in different tests or different years but must be in both reading and math.

A District Gifted Equity Committee is convened after testing results are available each year to make the final decisions about the students who receive service.  10% of each grade will be served in each elementary school.  If more than 10% of the students in a grade automatically qualify based on the first two criteria, they will all be served.

If the number of students who automatically qualify from the above criteria does not fill the 10% capacity, the committee will select additional students from the top 20% of the students in that grade in that building according to scores on the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test.  The committee will consider gender and ethnic balance.

During the school year students are added to the Focus groups if they qualify based on additional MAP or MCA testing.

When students qualify for Focus, they stay in the program throughout elementary school.  They do not have to qualify again each year.
