Meet Paola

When Paola Disconzi came to the United States in June 2015, she knew where Minnesota was, and that was about it. The Plymouth resident didn’t know English, either, but set out to learn it.

Five months later, the student has become a teacher, and recently finished the first session of Robbinsdale Area School Community Education’s “Italian for Travelers” class at Sandburg Learning Center.

Paola grew up not far from Venice, but came here when her husband found a new job in Plymouth. She left her family and friends behind, which was very difficult, she says. Not knowing anyone, she came to Adult Basic Education ESL classes to learn English.

“I knew nothing – just the name of the president,” she jokes. “My husband and I learned English together, and children’s books helped me in many ways. I started volunteering in a library, and I work in a shop a few days a week.”

Paola wanted to share her love for her native Italy, and came up with the idea for “Italian for Travelers.” The four-week offering recently wrapped up its first session, and the 10 students who participated gave Paola rave reviews.

“My English isn’t perfect, and I brought my dictionary, but I was so happy to teach them,” she says. “I want to share my knowledge with other people. You have to believe in yourself. If you do that, you can do amazing things.”
