Helen Quan, one of Robbinsdale Area Schools’ remarkable students, has found a world of learning and friendship in the district’s Adult Academic Program.

Helen, who came to the United States a decade ago from China, started taking classes three years ago to learn English. She originally came to learn the new language, but has since become a regular presence in the hallways of Sandburg Learning Center, moving from the Basic Skills program to pursuit of her GED.

“I come here every day,” she says. “I love it. It’s become part of my routine. There are always new things that I can learn.”

During her time at Sandburg, Helen has been involved with the Student Council, organizing school events and working to ensure open channels of cross-cultural communication. She also secured funding for the school to get an outdoor playground. Last year, she earned the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Outstanding Learner Award for 2015 from the Literacy Action Network of Minnesota.

“Helen has incredible enthusiasm and leadership,” said program director Theresa Zingery. “She’s taken advantage of a lot of opportunities for herself and for her kids. She’s kind and helpful to other students – she goes out of her way to help others.”
