The Robbinsdale Area Schools' All-District Band (ADB) is composed of students in grades 6 and 7 from both of the district's middle schools. ADB is currently under the direction of Todd Burkholder and Caryn Cummings.
All-District Band was formed in 2000 by elementary band director Lucy Jenner. The ensemble has rehearsed in many spaces throughout the district, including Robbinsdale Middle School and Plymouth Middle School, their current rehearsal location. The 2009-2010 season marked the 10th year anniversary of the band, for which director Lucy Jenner received a Seven Dreams Foundation in order to commission two pieces for the band. The first of the two pieces premiered in April 2010, with the second one set to premiere in the fall of 2010.
Rehearsal and Performance Schedule
Rehearsals for the ADB take place once a week after school in the Plymouth Middle School band room. The All-District Band gives a spring and winter concert, plays with the Armstrong Pep Band, and culminates the season with a recording session.
Auditions are held every spring at students' respective elementary and middle schools. Students will receive information and audition materials from their band directors in the spring.
Why offer special music groups?
After learning eighth, quarter, half and whole notes, second- and third-graders scored 100% higher than their peers who were taught fractions using traditional methods. (Neurological Research, 1999)
SAT scores for students who studied the arts more than four years were 59 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework or experience in the arts. (The College Board, Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, 1995. Similar results appear in 2000, 2001 and 2002 reports.)
