Plymouth Middle School Jazz Band opens for Grammy Award-winner Maria Schneider and the JazzMN Orchestra
The Plymouth Middle School Jazz Band was honored to give a pre-show performance on Saturday, April 8, for Grammy Award-winning artist Maria Schneider and the JazzMN Orchestra during their concert at Hopkins High School. The pre-show included famous tunes such as “Alright, Okay, You Win,” “Brazil,” “25 or 6 to 4,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Gospel John,” “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” “Free Ride” and “The Preacher.”
The 28-piece jazz band is made up of students in grades 6-8, and is under the direction of Lukas Skrove and Dr. Michael Stiegler. The mission of this organization is to expose students to classic jazz, big band and rock music while fostering a love for making music together. This dedicated jazz band meets before school at 7 a.m. every Tuesday morning. Skrove is a trumpet player and band instructor at Plymouth Middle School, and has worked with the jazz band for the past three years. Dr. Stiegler is a saxophone and clarinet player, and has been a jazz band parent volunteer since 1999.
