The Child Nutrition Department would like to welcome you to the 2016-17 school year. Breakfast and lunch are available at all of our schools. Student meals are planned to be healthy and well-balanced, providing students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
2016-17 school year:
*All kindergarten students will get breakfast for FREE every day if they come down to get breakfast.
*All students who qualify for free or reduced priced meals will receive FREE breakfast and FREE lunch. Applications must be filled out to qualify and must be filled out every school year. You can fill out an application online at http://rocketscan.rdale.org/ or request a paper application at any school or Education Service Center.
School meals offer students milk, fruit and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. School lunches meet standards requiring:
* Age-appropriate calorie limits
* Larger servings of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange
vegetables and legumes
* Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
* More whole grains
* And less sodium
We know how important it is to encourage students to consume healthier options, and we're always working to offer our students tastier and healthier choices. We have been working on some new and improved scratch recipes over the past year. We host student taste tests to get feedback directly from students and get them involved in the menu planning process. A daily entree salad will continue to be offered at the schools due to their success. Our school nutrition staff has found great ways to get students excited about healthy food choices and we'll continue to work on creative solutions to ensure healthy foods appeal to students.
School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families, too! Prices for 2016-17 are as follows:
Middle School: $2.60
FAIR School Crystal: $2.60
High School: $2.75
Breakfast at all schools: $1.30
Students bringing a lunch from home may purchase milk for $.50
Those students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch may eat both breakfast and lunch at no cost. All kindergarten students may eat breakfast at no cost. Forest, Lakeview, Noble, Northport and Sonnesyn Elementary schools have a Grab and Go Breakfast in the Classroom program. Students at these schools may eat breakfast at no cost.
We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria this fall.
Thank you, and here's to healthy eating!
