School Staff Create Virtual ‘Calming Room’ to Provide Social-Emotional Support, Resources
Posted on 04/15/2020
With many students and families adjusting to a “new normal” during the COVID-19 global pandemic, it is especially important to find ways to cope and relax. Counseling staff at Cooper High School, and counselors and the school social worker at Sandburg Middle School, created online spaces for students, staff and families to find tools and strategies for managing their social-emotional health.

“Our hope is that students, staff and families will use this site as a resource for support during these difficult times and even after we return to a new ‘normal,’” said Laura Ritter, Cooper High School counselor. “It's a ‘one-stop-shop’ to find soothing music to listen to, fun games when a break is needed, yoga and stretching to get the body moving, and includes links to find helpful community resources,” she continued.

At Cooper’s ‘Virtual Calming Room’ and Sandburg’s Resources website, students are also able to request a virtual or phone appointment with various support staff such as counselors, school social workers, school psychologists, culture and climate specialists and personal learning coaches. Additionally, there are links for mental health supports for families to access.
