Sonnesyn Elementary Hosts Virtual School DanceSonnesyn Elementary School was scheduled to have a school dance on Friday, April 3, 2020. Instead of canceling the dance, school staff made the decision to host the dance virtually.

Prior to school closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students had been learning and practicing dances in preparation for the upcoming school dance. Knowing how hard students had worked to learn the dances, Physical Education teacher, Kelly Heerschman, encouraged staff to create videos of themselves performing the dances the students had learned. School staff recorded 10 videos showing off their dance moves. The videos were shared with families through social media, and students were encouraged to dance at home. Students were able to participate in the dance, and show their families the dances they had been practicing.

“We knew our students had been looking forward to the school dance for months,” said Leia Ward, Principal of Sonnesyn Elementary. “We moved to a virtual event to provide our students the opportunity to engage with our staff, even if it wasn’t in the way we had originally planned,” she continued.
