Robbinsdale Area Schools (RAS) is pleased to announce Wilbur Winkelman has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2019 Minnesota Teacher of the Year honor. Mr. Winkelman is a 5th grade teacher at Lakeview Elementary in Robbinsdale; he was also the 2018 Robbinsdale School District Teacher of the Year.

“We are excited to recognize Mr. Winkelman for being a Minnesota Teacher of the Year Semifinalist,” said RAS Superintendent, Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins. “We have outstanding educators in our district who are focused on academic excellence for all,” he said.

An initial field of 168 candidates was originally selected from across the state, including Colleen Crossley, a teacher in the RAS Adult Academic Program based out of the Crystal Learning Center. Now that pool has narrowed to 40 semifinalists, determined by a selection panel of 23 community leaders.

“We are so proud of Wilbur on being selected as a semifinalist, and representing Robbinsdale Area Schools! This is well-deserved recognition of hard working, dedicated and innovative teaching,” said Peter Eckhoff, President of the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers.

This year marks the 55th Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. According to a release from Education Minnesota, the selection panel “will review the semifinalists’ portfolios again and review semifinalist video submissions in late March and will select about 10 finalists from among the group. The current Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Kelly D. Holstine, will announce her successor at a banquet May 5 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul.”
