Armstrong junior Stella Wright wins state poetry competition

Congratulations to Robbinsdale Armstrong High School junior Stella Wright, this year's Poetry Out Loud state champion. Stella will be representing the state at the national competition May 1.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country.

At the state competition, Wright presented three poems, which contained common themes of struggle, challenge and oppression. The first was an untitled 1854 poem about slavery by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. The second was "Ode to the Midwest” by poet Kevin Young, and the third was “I Look at the World” by Langston Hughes.
