Armstrong senior receives full-tuition, four-year scholarship

When Armstrong High School senior Kennie Garpue found out she’d been awarded a prestigious Dease Scholarship from the University of St. Thomas, the moment hit her hard—in the best way. “I was so overwhelmed with joy, it made me emotional,” she shared, beaming.

Each year, the Dease Scholarship Program awards 10 four-year, full-tuition scholarships to first-year students who demonstrate commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and their communities.

A senior captain of the Afro Empire Dance Team and a four-year participant in the AVID program at AHS, Garpue will join the Class of 2029 at St.Thomas this fall, and is “most excited about the educational opportunities St. Thomas presents.” She also looks forward to making new community connections, developing her leadership skills, and pursuing her passions.

“My family and my AVID teacher all supported me throughout this process. Also, my College Possible coach,” said Garpue, when asked about applying for the scholarship. “I’m very appreciative for all the support and care I’ve been shown throughout my whole high school career.”

She encourages other students to “be persistent, be courageous, speak your mind, and show care for others. Never give up and know that life is a journey, and it goes on!”

The Dease Scholarship Program intends to serve scholars by helping them realize their fullest potential, while connecting them with their fellow Dease Scholars at St. Thomas. The program includes civic engagement, leadership development, and social networking opportunities. Being a Dease Scholar involves a commitment not only to service, but also to learning how to be an effective changemaker for one’s campus, community, and beyond.
