Celebrating 2026 Robbinsdale Teacher and Education Assistant of the Year

Two Robbinsdale Area Schools (Rdale) educators are being recognized by the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers (RFT) for the incredible ways they inspire students, build relationships, and bring learning to life each day.

Claire Mielke named 2026 Teacher of the Year

Cooper High School (CHS) art teacher Claire Mielke has been named the 2026 Robbinsdale Teacher of the Year. Mielke, who has taught art at CHS for 10 years and in Rdale since 2013, is known for her passion, dedication, and empowerment of students through art.

Shock and gratitude were Mielke’s immediate reactions to being named Teacher of the Year, as she shared her pride in being chosen for her love of teaching and learning. During her interview as part of the Teacher of the Year selection process, she highlighted that learning begins with relationships and that a classroom rooted in trust creates the conditions where meaningful learning can truly happen.

“What I enjoy most about teaching is the constant growth and joy it brings. My students keep me curious, humble, and laughing. They challenge my thinking, share their perspectives, and teach me something new every single day. Teaching is messy, creative, and deeply human - and that’s exactly what I love about it. Our students are truly incredible, and I feel fortunate to learn alongside them. I can’t imagine doing anything else,” said Mielke. “My students have shaped me into the person and the teacher I have always dreamed of being.”

“Her students adore her, her colleagues admire her, and her classroom radiates the joy she brings to teaching every single day. Ms. Mielke’s passion, positivity, and unwavering dedication make her an extraordinary educator and an even better human being,” shared CHS Principal Shaunece Smith.

RFT President Peter Eckhoff described Mielke as a “shining example of the extraordinary passion, talent, and dedication that define the teachers of (Rdale). The connections she builds with her students are nothing short of remarkable—making every learner feel seen, valued, and inspired.”

Lisa Pleban named 2026 Education Assistant of the Year

The School of Engineering and Arts’ (SEA) Lisa Pleban was honored as the 2026 Education Assistant (EA) of the year. Through her role as a Tutor EA, Pleban has provided vital support to students through one-on-one or small group interventions at SEA for four years.

Pleban shared that she was completely shocked and extremely honored to receive this recognition, expressing deep gratitude for her colleagues at SEA and reflecting on the joy she finds in her role.

“There are so many reasons why I enjoy being an EA. I love getting to know the students. I try to connect with everyone that I can and learn something about them that nobody else knows. I try to find connections with the students about their interests,” said Pleban. “I really enjoy getting to pull small groups for reading. It is a true joy to see how far they have grown throughout the year. I enjoy doing read-alouds in various classrooms. I can't imagine doing anything else.”

Eckhoff praised Pleban as a “utility player” whose impact is felt in every corner of the school, every single day. “She brings warmth, positivity, and joy to SEA each day, lifting spirits with her smile and creating a welcoming environment wherever she goes. Whether she’s in the classroom, the lunchroom, or simply walking the halls, she is a constant source of support—always ready to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, and a caring heart.”

Celebrating Our Educators

Mielke and Pleban were celebrated during a special in-person event on May 21, co-hosted by the RFT and the Seven Dreams Education Foundation. The annual celebration honors educators who go above and beyond to support students and foster a love of learning in Rdale.
