Finding purpose and balance as a tutor

As a mom of two students attending school in Robbinsdale, Thea was looking to return to the workplace. With her youngest entering kindergarten, it seemed the perfect time to pivot from being a full-time mom. A friend who was serving with Reading Corps, told her about the opportunity to become a tutor.

With a location close to home, part-time hours and a schedule that would work for her family, it sounded exactly like what she was looking for! Now beginning her fourth year as a Reading Corps tutor, Thea loves the experience and seeing her students succeed. “I have gotten to know these kids so well and they’re so much fun to work with,” she said. "To see that spark of learning and the way their eyes light up is such an amazing experience.”

Throughout her years of tutoring, Thea says the relationships with the kids is what always keeps her coming back. She really enjoys working individually with her students and watching their confidence grow. “There is not a single kid who didn't experience success during my time with them,” she noted, “The connections are so important for the students and the impact is really powerful.”
