Lakeview Destination Imagination team takes third in tournament

Lakeview Elementary’s Destination Imagination team, the Trend Setters, represented Robbinsdale Area Schools at the Minnesota affiliate tournament and won third place in the event’s Fine Arts challenge.

In Destination Imagination, students work in teams to solve open-ended STEAM challenges designed to teach the creative process. Lakeview’s seven-member team, made up of fourth and fifth grade students, started meeting in October to develop improv acting skills and research theatrical effects.

The team created their own story, props, and costumes to address the challenge “Less is More,” which was required to include a character who experiences an intense emotion when a small change has a big effect.

The students created a skit based on a group of aliens landing on Earth and searching for food. The main character, Glob Glob, required a "dislike-itis" potion to cure her problem of becoming hangry. After being open-minded to some new delicious dumplings she tries, she thankfully overcomes her problem and avoids hangry emotional meltdowns in the future.

The Trend Setters “had a great time at the tournament and developed great creative problem solving skills in the process,” said Jennifer Hollander, Lakeview EL Teacher and co-coach of the team.

Destination Imagination is a global community united by a core belief that when students have the freedom to grow and collaborate without boundaries, their confidence explodes and the world opens up to them in new ways.
