The 7.2 percent increase for 2023 will generate $4.8 million in additional levy funding.

The Robbinsdale Area Schools (Rdale) Board of Education approved its preliminary budget in December, which will result in a 7.2 percent increase in property taxes for 2023 compared to last year.

Executive Director of Finance Ukee Dozier presented the budget and levy during the district’s annual Truth in Taxation hearing in December. The primary reason for the increase in taxes is inflation, he said, which has been a financial concern across the country for nearly a year.

“We are good stewards of our community’s hard-earned dollars and the investment it has made over the years in our facilities, our programs and staff, and especially our students,” Dozier said.

The 7.2 percent tax increase for 2023 puts Rdale in the middle of the district’s seven cities and Hennepin County in terms of growing levies. The cities of Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale all have 2023 levy increases of 9.5 percent or more. Brooklyn Center, New Hope, Plymouth and Hennepin County all have increases of 6.9 percent or less.

All told, this year’s percent property tax increase will amount to $4.8 million in funding, most of which ($3.5 million) will go to the district’s general fund to pay for the daily costs of school – things like teacher salaries, bus transportation, and paper. Another large portion ($1.1 million) will go to the long term facilities maintenance fund, which goes toward maintenance of the community’s investment in district facilities by providing money to repair or replace old equipment, and fix wear and tear.
