Robbinsdale Area Schools Students Participate in Hands-On Activities Through Camp STEMtastic

More than 100 elementary students in Robbinsdale Area Schools participated in Camp STEMtastic, a collaborative summer science program between Meadow Lake Elementary, in New Hope, and the School of Engineering and Arts (SEA), in Golden Valley from June 22 -26, 2020. Due to COVID-19, the free program was offered virtually to students in Kindergarten through 4th grade at both schools. 

Now in its fifth year, the week-long program offers hands-on learning experiences based on science curriculum which is aligned with Minnesota state standards. Students who participated in the program picked up kits from their respective schools prior to camp starting. The activities varied based on the student’s age group, and included activities such as snap circuits, building bridges, catapults, musical instruments and slime. The activities promote problem solving, recording observations and conducting experiments. 

“Students had so much fun participating in Camp STEMtastic this year,” said Jody Durand, Grade 4 Teacher at SEA. “The curriculum really exposes students to all types of educational activities through hands-on learning,” Durand continued.  

Families provided staff with feedback, and shared the program kept students' minds sharp during the summer months as well as provided families an opportunity to directly engage with their students each day. Families also stated the program helped their students keep a routine, and become more comfortable with technology. 

 “Our students really enjoy this programming and we were so glad to be able to offer it again this year,” said Nancy Froelich, Principal of Meadow Lake Elementary. “Our district is excited to be able to offer summer activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Froelich continued.
