Students learn life skills through charitable giving project

Students from Robbinsdale Transition Center (RTC) undertook three community-based projects last semester as part of their social interaction class. In the culminating project, they raised over $600 using GoFundMe and purchased toys for Children's Hospitals in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Raising the funds was just the beginning. Students had to practice budgeting and money management skills as they matched their available cash with the lists of toys needed by the hospitals. “They shopped in groups,” says Tracy Ogren, special education supervisor, “and sorted out the gifts and sent them to the hospitals.”

“The students,” adds Ogren, “had a ball working together. They feel good about it, and they love being able to give back to the community they live in.”
