Update: Plymouth Middle School Incident

April 26, 2021

Dear Robbinsdale Area Schools Families,

I’m writing to inform you about a serious incident that occurred at Plymouth Middle School today. This morning, a student brought a loaded handgun to the school, and then fired multiple shots into the ceiling of a hallway.

Thankfully, no one was injured, though a number of people witnessed the incident, including students. At this time, all students and staff are safe, and there is no further threat to anyone in the school.

Plymouth Middle School administrators and police responded immediately to the incident, and the school went into lockdown. The student who fired the weapon was taken into police custody quickly and without further incident. There will be a visible police presence at Plymouth Middle School for the rest of the day, and the school will remain in lockdown during that time. There was no threat to any other district school, and at no time did any other school go into lockdown.

Our district takes every weapon-related incident seriously. We are cooperating with law enforcement and also conducting our own investigation.

We will follow appropriate disciplinary guidelines as outlined on page 20 of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. During that process, we will be limited with the information we’ll be able to share about specific discipline due to state data privacy laws.

We know this was a scary and traumatic event for everyone at Plymouth Middle School, and across the district. Please know that each district school has a support team that includes school counselors, school psychologists, social workers and others who are available to work with students as they cope with the things they’re feeling and experiencing due to this incident.

Finally, when the time is right, please take a moment to talk with your student about school safety. It’s critical that students understand the importance of reporting unsafe situations to an adult staff member immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we strive to provide a safe and productive learning environment for all of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephanie Burrage
Interim Superintendent
