Every Day Counts

In Robbinsdale Area Schools, we know that every day a student is in school matters. Being present consistently helps students stay connected to learning, build relationships, and access the supports they need to be successful. Plus, attending school every day helps children feel better about school—and about themselves.

Attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success. Regular attendance supports academic progress, social development, and student well-being.

Families: We need you as our partner

We know families juggle a lot, and we know that life happens. We also know students are most successful when schools and families work together.

Please help your child attend school as consistently as possible, and communicate with your school whenever your child is unable to attend.

Excused vs. unexcused absences

What is an excused absence?

  • Illness
  • Medical, dental, orthodontic, or counseling appointment
  • Family emergency
  • Family vacation (up to 5 days during the school year)
  • Funeral
  • Court appearance
  • Religious holiday

What is an unexcused absence?

  • Overslept or did not get enough sleep
  • Missed the bus
  • Weather is too cold/hot
  • Had to babysit
  • Had car trouble
  • Refused to attend school
  • Skipped school (truancy)
Land acknowledgement

Did you know?

When a student misses just 2 days of school per month, over the course of one school year, they will miss:

  • 20 days of school per year
  • 30 hours of math instruction
  • 60 hours of reading and writing instruction
  • Nearly 1 full year of school by the time they graduate

Even small absences can add up quickly—especially when students are learning new skills every day.
